The latest addition to our weekend showcase is the entertaining Double Mugging. The Roping Fiesta Committee invites the best to compete in this event. A timed competition where two cowboys share the duties of roping and tying the legs of a 500-600 pound calf. This is a competitive step from what is still a common practice used on ranches to treat cattle in open pasture without the benefit of pens or panels to contain or hold the animal. One member of the team will rope the animal while riding horseback. Both cowboys will dismount their horses, put "hands on" the heifer and attempt to "mug" the animal on it's side. The final step is to tie three feet together and the tie must hold for six seconds without coming undone. This event combines roping skills, horsemanship, brute strength, and very little fineness. It is an even match between animal and human. Quite often the heifer wins and never gets tied. Spent cowboys leave the field with bruises and the occasional scar...earned on the "Fiesta Dirt" in front of 5,000 fans.
This event is held at the Outdoor Roping Arena in conjunction with the Invitational Steer Roping. Tickets are available in advance at the stock show office, by phone at 325-653-7785, or at the gate for $10.00 each. Seating is reserved.
