Want the facts about Lip Chip LLC?
• Each horse is microchipped with a low frequency microchip, either in the superior lip placement, or the nuchal ligament by certified personnel. Once the horse is microchipped, it is enrolled into the Chip Link System.
• Horses that are previously microchipped with an ISO compliant low frequency microchip can use their existing chip, if it can be successfully scanned, to enroll in the Chip Link System.
• Each horse has their owner information, breed, age, sex, color, markings, and emergency contact information uploaded into the secure database.
• Each horse has 4 current photos as well as copies of their current coggins, piroplasmosis, health certificates, and registration papers uploaded into the secure database.
o Only certified personnel may enroll horses and upload this data.
• Once enrolled, a simple scan with the Chip Link Scanner will unlock this data and send it to a mobile app housed on a smartphone, tablet, or laptop.
• Owners, trainers, and veterinarians alike who have horses enrolled in 2022 will have first opportunity to utilize the full version of the Chip Link App in January of 2023.
• The Chip Link App will offer:
o Digital tracking of horse ownership information and documents (coggins, registration papers, piroplasmosis, etc). No need for paper copies!
o Easy check in/check out of equine venues such as racetracks, show venues, rodeo grounds, simply scan the horse, verify documents, and go!
o Performance tracking, whether racing, rodeo, or showing, keep track of it all!
o Daily training logs specified for your discipline.
Can microchips track my horse?
FALSE! A microchip is a low frequency and therefore inactive RFID tag that is the size of a grain of rice. It does not actively transmit a signal, and must be energize by a scanner in order to be read. The microchip houses a 15 digit ID number and in some instances can calibrate the temperature of the horse.
Why would I need a microchip?
Microchipping can ensure safety for your horse and convenience for your barn. Instead of having to keep all of your coggins, health certificates, and registration paperwork in your glovebox, you can simply access these on your Chip Link smart phone application. Furthermore if your horse was even stolen, lost in a natural disaster, or looked identical to another horse, microchips are a fool proof way to ensure your horse was safely identified and returned to its rightful owner.
Why the lip?
After years of research, Lip Chip has seen between 30-50% migration in microchips placed in the neck. We see less than 1% migration for the lip placement. Horses are naturally curious animals that approach foreign objects with their noses. By placing the chip in the forward most part of the animal, they will naturally approach the scanner and give the user a safer space between themselves and the horse. It also means less contact since a horse can be scanned in the stall, trailer, or pasture without having to be haltered or further handled, which helps with eliminating the spread of potentially fatal equine infectious diseases.
Lip vs. neck, which hurts worse?
Because there is simply fatty tissue in the upper mandible area (aka lip) of a horse, the implantation process is general less painful versus being injected into the neck of the horse where there is muscle, nerves, and the chip is housed in a ligament. We see about a 12 hour turnaround time where the implantation site has healed completely with no residual soreness, whereas implanting a chip into the neck can cause neck soreness for days. Chips should only be implanted by certified personnel.
